Who is this course for?

You should attend this training course if you are part of the staff of a Local Internet Registry (LIR) and if you:

  • Need to learn how to query the RIPE Database and interpret the results
  • Register Internet resources in the RIPE Database
  • Use the Internet Routing Registry

This course doesn’t cover

  • Technical aspects of IPv4 or IPv6
  • How operate an LIR (Local Internet Registry)

Course Overview

Unit 1 - Introduction to the RIPE Database

What is the purpose of the RIPE Database and why should you use it?

Learn how a RIPE Database object is structured. You will also get to know what attributes and values are, and how to interpret an object template.

Find out how objects are connected to each other.

Unit 2 - Protecting Your Objects

Learn how to protect your objects using a maintainer.

Learn about multiple maintainers, authentication attributes, and other best practices to help you share control over your objects.

Unit 3 - Registering Contact Information

Find out how you can contact others when you have questions or network problems. You will also learn how you can create and group these contacts for your own organisation.

Unit 4 - Registering Networks

What are inetnum (IPv4) and inet6num (IPv6) objects? What statuses can inet(6)num objects have?

Learn how to register IPv4 and IPv6 assignments.

Unit 5 - Querying

Find out how querying the RIPE Database works and how you can use flags to make your queries more efficient.

How can you search for all address space allocated to your organisation? Learn how to make inverse queries so that you can find exactly what you want.

Unit 6 - The RIPE Routing Registry

What is the RIPE Routing Registry? Learn how to write your routing policies in RPSL in the aut-num object.

Learn to use three RIPE Database objects in the RIPE Routing Registry: the route object, the route6 object, and the as-set object.

Unit 7 - Setting up Reverse Delegation

What is reverse DNS and how does it work?
