What you will learn

You will learn the basics of planning your deployment and creating effective addressing plans.

You will also learn how to:

  • Explain what IPv6 is and its format
  • Identify the different types of IPv6 addresses
  • Obtain an IPv6 allocation, understand address space types, and register them in the RIPE Database
  • Explain the IPv6 protocol functions with focus on the Neighbor Discovery Protocol and address auto-configuration
  • Understand the best way to plan an IPv6 deployment
  • Beginner (Entry level)
  • 1 Day
  • Classroom
  • English
  • For Members
  • Gets you ready for the IPv6 Fundamentals exam

Who is this course for?

You should attend this training course if you are part of the staff of a Local Internet Registry (LIR) and if you:

  • Are thinking about deploying IPv6 in your organisation
  • Have been told you need to deploy IPv6
  • Need to convince your manager that IPv6 must be deployed
  • Looked at an IPv6 address and thought it was too complicated to deploy in your network

This course doesn’t cover

  • Technical details of IPv6
  • How to configure routers, servers or other devices for IPv6
  • How to operate a Local Internet Registry (LIR)

Skills you will gain

After completing this course you will be knowledgeable in

  • IPv6 Addressing Architecture
  • IPv6 Addressing Plans
  • IPv4 to IPv6 Transition
  • IPv6 Deployment

Pre-Requisites

  • Familiarity with common IP terminology
  • Practical knowledge of running an IP network

Course Overview

Expand All

Section 1 - IPv4

This section talks about the current status of IPv4. What happened to IPv4 and why is there an IPv6.

Section 2 - IPv6 Address Basics

IPv6 addresses look complicated and different to what we are used to. We will explain the logic behind IPv6 addresses.

Section 3 - Getting It

The administrative work to get your allocation and registering the assignments in the RIPE Database.

Section 4 - IPv6 Protocol Basics

The characteristics of the IPv6 protocol that set it apart from IPV4 and make network operations more efficient. The most important are the address auto-configuration process and the Neighbor Discovery Protocol.

Section 5 - Addressing Plans

Some guidelines about making addressing plans.

Section 6 - IPv6 Packets

The fundaments of how IPv6 packets are structured.

Section 7 - Deploying IPv6

Several important aspects that people should consider when deploying IPv6 on their network.

Section 8 - Real Life IPv6 Deployment

Real examples of succesful IPv6 deployment scenarios.
