Local Internet Registry Fundamentals

Learn about the roles and responsibilities of Internet Registries, and how you can shape the Internet as a member of the community.

What you will learn

In this course, you will learn about what it means to operate an LIR, what a Regional Internet Registry (RIR) such as the RIPE NCC does, and how we all can contribute to a better Internet by working together.

Course goals:

  • How Internet number resources (IP, ASN) are distributed across the world
  • How to become a member of the RIPE NCC
  • How to perform the main roles and responsibilities of a Local Internet Registry
  • How to participate actively as part of the Internet community

The modules are interactive and consist of reading, practice, videos, guided exercises and questions.

The course is in English. You can take it independently, or in combination with the other RIPE NCC Academy courses and Webinars.

Who is this course for?

You should attend this training course if you are part of the staff of a Local Internet Registry (LIR) and if you:

  • Need to learn how to manage your LIR's Internet resources
  • Need to understand how Internet resource registration works
  • Are interested in learning how the Policy Development Process works

This course doesn’t cover

  • Technical of IPv4 or IPv6
  • How to configure routers, servers or other devices
  • How to operate the RIPE Database in detail

Course Overview

Module 1 - Understanding the Internet Ecosystem

You will learn about the format of the course, a few important terms to help you follow the course better, and where Internet number resources come from.

Module 2 - Your Role in the Internet Ecosystem

You will find out what Regional Internet Registries (RIR) and Local Internet Registries (LIR) do, and how to become a member of the RIPE NCC.

Module 3 - Requesting, Sponsoring, Distributing and Registering Resources as an LIR

Find out how you can request, sponsor, distribute and register Internet number resources.

Module 4 - Transferring, Maintaining and Updating Resources as an LIR

Learn about transferring, updating and maintaining your Internet number resources as a Local Internet Registry (LIR).

Module 5 - Getting Help and Support

You will learn where you can go for support and help from the RIPE NCC. You will also find out how you can play a role in shaping Internet policies.

Local Internet Registry Fundamentals Exam

The content of this course aligns with the Local Internet Registry Fundamentals exam.

After finishing this course you will be prepared for the exam and obtain the certification.
